Cloudflare One is a platform that unifies security and network performance in a single global fabric. It accelerates the delivery of websites and applications over a worldwide network while protecting against attacks, unauthorised access and overload. In practice

A company with customers in several countries notices that the website loads noticeably more slowly for visitors abroad than for visitors in Germany. Via Cloudflare One, the website is held at several locations worldwide, so that every visitor is served from the geographically nearest point instead of every request being passed all the way through to the actual server. At the same time, the platform checks every incoming request for suspicious patterns before it even reaches the server. Loading times drop noticeably for international visitors, while the origin server is relieved of automated attack attempts — the actual data remains untouched by this, in the EU.

When we do not use it

For a small, regionally focused website with no particular protection needs, the full Zero Trust feature set of Cloudflare One is not necessary — a simpler hosting setup suffices there, and we avoid unnecessary complexity. For the actual data storage we do not use Cloudflare as a matter of principle: personal data and databases stay separately on European infrastructure; Cloudflare handles delivery and protection only, never storage.

For a website this means: the content does not sit in one place but is delivered from the location closest to the visitor. Someone opening a page from Worms does not wait for a server in Virginia. That is exactly why we use it as the delivery layer — not as a replacement for European hosting, but in front of it.
